The planned carbon price remains easily the dominant national political issue this week, with intense media debate about who is winning the public debate, terrible opinion polls for the Government leading to further heavy criticism of the timing and nature of the announcement, while industry groups started lobbying for their preferred policy settings.

Colonel Gaddafi’s forces, with superior hardware and air supremacy, seem to be slowly destroying the parts of Libya that have been under rebel control, while the international community debates what direct action, if any, should be taken, with the French at one end of the spectrum having already recognised the opposition as the legitimate Government, while the Germans have spoken publicly against any military action in North Africa.

Julia Gillard became the fourth Australian Prime Minister to address a joint sitting of U.S. Congress, following several days of meetings with key administration figures including President Obama. Her talks focused on the military, diplomatic and trade relationship between the two countries, carbon pricing only briefly mentioned.
Soul searching amongst the NSW ALP ahead of what the opinion polls say and all the pundits believe will be a thumping defeat, has already spilled out into the open, with the Premier calling the NSW General Secretary of the party a “fool” for publicly admitting the Government cannot win the 26th March election.
Still not too much happening on the field for the Australian cricket team at the World Cup, with their second round place already almost certain, despite having played only half their games, with most focus on the return of Mike Hussey to the team after having originally been left out due to injury.

Quote of the Week:

"This year you have marked the centenary of President Reagan's birth. He remains a great symbol of American optimism.” – after praising both John Howard and Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard saves her highest praise for Ronald Reagan…yes, that Ronald Reagan…during her speech to US Congress.
