The national public holiday Australia Day tends to always raise discussions in the media about nationalism, racism and cultural admiration or indeed cringe. This year, the day was marked with an Aboriginal protest after comments by Tony Abbott that saw he and the PM briefly besieged in a posh Canberra restaurant. Tabloids and morning television programs have been quick to refer to the body guard protection of Gillard, calling it a Kevin Costner moment.
Its finals weekend at the Australian Open, with the run of Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt snuffed out by the world number one and three. Meanwhile the women’s final between Sharapova and Azarenka promises to be loud if nothing else, while the men’s looks likely to be Djokovic v Nadal, one v two.
Its been another great start for Australia in the fourth Test in Adelaide as they aim for a clean sweep, with double hundreds from both Clarke and Ponting. An equally dismal response from India, Virat Kohli providing the only bright spot with the tourists first century of what must now seem one long nightmare of a series for the legendary names in the Indian batting line-up.
Pokies reform remained one of the leading issues, with more commentators questioning the motives of Julia Gillard in avoiding a vote on Andrew Wilkie’s reforms, and questioning how far Wilkie is likely to go in making the Government’s life more difficult, many commentators claiming the Prime Minister’s already low “trust bank” will increase the difficulty of explaining her backdown on the issue.
And just after Kim Carr announced aid for the auto industry, one major manufacturer announces hundreds of job losses, with many business commentators saying the end of the local industry is now all but inevitable. The company blamed global economic downturn, a high Australian dollar and low demand as the reason for the redundancies.
Quote of the Week:
"Before, I think you all thought I was a mental case but I was just young and emotional," ... "But I'm really glad the way I fought. That's the thing I'm most proud of, I fought for every ball." Victoria Azarenka, after beating Kim Clijsters in the Australian Open semi finals.
